The legend of Tasik Dayang Bunting goes like this: The favourite bathing pool of a celestial princess named Mambang Sari was said to be Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden). A prince, Mat Teja, fell madly in love with her and tricked her into marrying him.

Sadly, their child died from a mysterious illness at the age of seven days. Distraught, the grieving Mambang Sari left the child's body in the lake and returned to her heavenly abode. Today, some believe that barren women who bathe in this lake will be endowed with a child.

Penang National Park

It is the smallest national park in the country with a size of 2,562 hectares. It was gazetted in 2003 and is home to 46 species of birds such as the stork-billed kingfishers, white-breasted waterhens and great egrets.

A 2000 expedition led by the Malaysian Nature Society recorded 417 flora and 143 fauna species. Before the area was designated as a national park, the locals knew it as Pantai Acheh Forest Reserve. Some of the activities carried out are fishing, swimming and hiking.

The pure, sandy stretch of Pantai Kerachut is also a favourite nesting place of Green turtles from April to August, and the Olive Ridley from September to February. The turtle hatchery set up in Pantai Kerachut in 1995 is now managed by the State Fisheries Department along with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) and the Forestry Department. They also manage the upkeep of the park, which is in pristine conditions.

Some of the best hardwood trees can be found here, especially from the shorea species, such as Meranti and Merawan Baru. In fact, the area is the only known place in Penang where the red, paper-like barked Gelam trees grow.

The bio-diversity of the park is also impressive, with 1,000 species of plants including five different species of the Bintangor tree.

Besides this, the park is the only one in Malaysia that contains six different types of habitat a meromictic lake (a lake that occurs seasonally, where there is a distinct layering of waters), wetlands, mangroves, mudflats, coral reefs and turtle nesting beaches.

Pangkor Island

Pangkor, with its charming mix of fishing settlements and resorts, is a fascinating and convenient holiday destination. It presents the visitor with a rare chance to live near fishermen and observe their lifestyle and also to simply enjoy the fine beaches and resort amenities.

Belum Forest Reserve

Towards the northern parts of Lake Temenggor, in northern Peninsula Malaysia (Perak state), lies a vast area of virgin jungle known as the Belum Forest Reserve. Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary

Matang Mangrove Forest is the largest stand of mangrove ecosystems in Peninsular Malaysia. These ecologically abundant mangrove habitats stretch along the west coast tidal mudflats of northern Perak for almost 50km plus another 40km along the shorelines of the sheltered river systems within the reserve's five estuaries.

During the migration season between August and April every year, more than 200,000 migratory birds representing some 50 species are estimated to stop over here.

There are also well-equipped and informative visitor centres where you can get detailed educational programmes and displays, which focus on the importance of safeguarding and preserving the mangrove ecosystems and the large numbers of resident and migrant bird species.

The Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary has won the "Best Tourist Attraction (Natural Attraction)" category during the Malaysia Tourism Awards, a prestigious award presented to agencies and organisations which contribute to the development of tourism in Malaysia.

Taiping Lake Gardens

One cannot claim to have visited Taiping without taking some time off to soak in the natural beauty of the Taiping Lake Gardens. Built on top of an abandoned tin mine, the gardens were opened in 1880, earning them a place in the history books as the first public garden in then-Malaya.

Huge ancient rain trees (“angsana”) line the lake; their branches stretching from one end of the road into the waters across, making the perfect backdrop for couples taking their wedding photos.

Spread over 64 hectares, the lake has ten scenic lakes and ponds, a Lotus Pool, charming bridges, tracks for jogging and reflexology, all surrounded by tropical plants, flowers, trees and wildlife. Tempurung Cave (Gua Tempurung)

The cave is probably the largest natural limestone cave in Peninsular Malaysia.

Located in the vicinity of Gopeng, 24km south of Ipoh, the cave is approximately 1.5km long.

Made up of five huge domes which ceilings resemble coconut shells, each dome has different formations of stalagmites and stalactites.

The domes also differ from one another in terms of temperature, water level, content of limestone and marble.

Gua Teluk Kelawar, Lenggong

Gua Teluk Kelawar is located at the Bukit Kepala Gajah limestone complex, latitude 5° 07.44’ north and longitude 100° 58.60’ east, 76 meters above sea level. Located one kilometer from Lenggong, Perak, research was first carried out by the Malaysian Archaeological Research Centre until 1990. Later on, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) also carried out excavation works and found that the cave was used 11,000 to 6,000 years ago.

Many artefacts found at the site include tools and food deposits such as river snails, Brotia Costula and Brotia spinosa. There were also evidence of wild boar and deer, and this denoted that the environment was very much the same as today’s tropical rainforest.

Research also uncovered human remains (GTK 1) dated 8,000 years ago. There were also stone tools and food deposits at the site. The burial indicated that the Palaeolithic era in Malaysia continued until early holosen, before they made pottery. Gua Teluk Kelawar also has protective features commonly found during the formation of limestone in Malaysia.

As such, early man (10,000 years ago) used the cave as a stop-point. Excavations uncovered stone tools, food deposits as well as animal bones, shells and pieces of pottery.

Stone tools found here include pebbles, hammer and others. The stones were similar to those tools used at Kota Tampan and Gua Gunung Runtuh. There are also pottery shards with early minimal designs (6,000 years ago). Animal bones ( monkeys (Macaca sp.), deer (Muntiacus munjak), wild boar (Sus sp.), and reptiles. There were also river snail shells (Brotia costula and Brotia spinosa).

Seri Menanti Royal Museum

The Seri Menanti Royal Museum was built in 1902 - 1905. It was originally a palace for the Negeri Sembilan Royal family. It is situated in the Royal town of Seri Menanti, about 50 km from the capital, Seremban.

This five storey wooden palace, was built using no nails or screws. The carpenters at the time used wooden pegs so that the palace would be able to withstand the times.

It also uses 99 solid timber pillars, soaring 65 feet. Black in colour, the palace also has intricate flower motifs beautifying the regal palace.

Visitors can find costumes, weaponry, bed chambers as well as documents on the royal lineage on display in the museum.

St.John's Fort

Rebuilt by the Dutch in the 18th century, St. John's Fort was once a private Portuguese chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

The fort has an interesting feature - cannons face inland as, during that time, attacks on Melaka came mainly from the hinterland instead of from the sea.

St.Paul's Hill (A'Famosa)

The Portuguese colonised Melaka from 1511 to 1641. The first thing they did was build a fort overlooking the river, calling it A'Famosa. As Melaka was the centre of struggles between super powers of the time, and suffered the constant threat of attack, the A'Famosa fort was critical in Portugal maintaining its colonial foothold in the Far East.

Within the fort walls were housing and food stores, a castle, a meeting room for the Portuguese Council and five churches. A seven-month attack by the Dutch just about destroyed the entire fortress, leaving only the entrance faade and the structure of a church at the top of the hill.

Go for a stroll up St. Paul's Hill on a cool late afternoon and wander among the majestic trees and historical remnants. Here, you can almost imagine the glories and miseries of the besieged lives the Portuguese would have led right here all those years ago...

Portuguese Square

This square is also known as 'Mini Lisbon'. Located within the Portuguese Settlement, the square is the centre of Portuguese culture in Melaka and in Malaysia.

The small kampung, or village, around the square is the heart of Melaka's Eurasian community, descended from marriages that took place between colonial Portuguese and Malays some 400 years ago.

There are occasional performances of Portuguese dances and music. There is a bulletin board at the square that lists upcoming cultural events. Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum

The 'Straits Chinese', also called the Baba and Nyonya, are Chinese of noble descent who have adopted much of the Malay culture into theirs. This has been a gradual process lasting over 400 years since the great Chinese explorer Admiral Cheng Ho first brought Chinese settlers to Melaka. Over the centuries, the Baba Nyonya have developed a distinct and highly interesting culture that is unique to Malaysia's west coast, particularly Melaka.

The public can now view the historical artefacts unique to this heritage at a captivating private museum run by the Babas and Nyonyas of Melaka. Within the walls of this heritage building, you can learn everything there is to know about this unique culture.

Zoo Melaka

Kampung Hulu's Mosque

The mosque, built in 1728 during the Dutch Occupancy, is the oldest mosque in the country. Its unique architectural style is a unique blend of Sumatran, Hindu and Western architecture.

All of the building's original wooden structures except the four main pillars and the roof structure were replaced with concrete. Within the mosque compound, you can find the grave of Sayyid Abdullah Al-Haddad, a famous religious teacher, whom many regarded as a "Wali" (Saint).

A good way to see the Kampung Hulu Mosque is to include it as part of your walking tour of nearby Jonker Street. The Mosque is set just one street back from the famous street.

Bastion Middleburg

After the fall of Melaka from the Portuguese to the Dutch on 14 January 1641, new measures were taken to ensure the safety of Melaka. The Dutch fortified the walls of Melaka city, which further strengthened the existing city’s defences left by the Portuguese.

The Dutch still received threats from outsiders and locals in a bid to wrestle back the city of Melaka. The fortification of the city’s walls involved the building of a bastion or control tower strategically located at the mouth of Melaka River, the focal point for trade and stopover for international ships.

The building of a bastion, known as Middleburg was carried out by the Dutch in 1660. This new control tower added to the existing bastions of Melaka city to nine. The defences of the city became strengthened with this new bastion as it regulated the area surrounding Melaka River, busy with shipping and trading activities at the time. The existing defence system with bastion provided cannon support to the military. It proved a vital factor in overcoming unseen threats.

Taman Mini Malaysia & Mini ASEAN

The Taman Mini Malaysia cultural park is located a few kilometres outside of Melaka, near the town of Ayer Keroh. If you have an interest in traditional architecture and ways of life, this is a great place to go exploring. Each of the homes represents the architectural style of the 13 states in Malaysia and is furnished with various items, arts and crafts which depict the culture of each state.

Inside each house, you can find a range of genuine handicrafts originating from each state or county. The life-like figures 'inhabiting' each charming home on stilts are garbed in their respective traditional costumes.

Other attractions in the park include weekly cultural shows and traditional games. Basically, this is an opportunity to see all Malaysian architecture and heritage in a short all-encompassing outing. And it's a nice break from the hustle and bustle of nearby urban Melaka.

Melaka City Archaeological Excavation Site

Research and archaeological excavation works at the playground started from 1 June till 30 June, 2010. This site is situated at Jalan Kota, next to the Central Melaka police headquarters. This area as chosen due to its proximity to the remnants of the city’s walls, from Bastion Fredrick Hendrick to Bastion Santiago, based on a sketch of a Portuguese (1588) and Dutch (1792) maps.

Excavation works started manually and systematically archaeologically. The works uncovered the remnants of the city’s walls that were built using laterite stones, organised methodically by the Portuguese and fortified by the Dutch. However, the British powered Melaka and destroyed the city walls.

Besides the city’s wall structure, the original drainage system of the Melaka was also found at the site. The drains were square (40 cm x 60 cm) made using laterite. Other artefacts found at the site were Ming and Ching dynasty porcelain shards, stoneware, Dutch rock, pottery, animal bones, steel and others. However, the artefacts were found scattered throughout the area as this was also part of a walled up dam during the British era.

Culture Museum Park

Research and excavation works at Taman Muzium Budaya (Culture Museum Park) started 1 June till 30 June, 2010. The area is located at Jalan Kota near Taman Muzium Budaya (in front of the Melaka Malay Sultanate Palace). Based on map drawings made by the Dutch, the area may have remnants of a fort wall jutting towards Santiago gate and Hendrieta Lousia bastion.

Excavations have unearthed the foundation of the Melaka fort wall from Santiago gate, Hendrieta Louisa bastion as well as corner wall of the bastion.

Other artefacts were discovered at this site including Chinese porcelain fragments (from Ming and Ching Dynasties), stoneware, Dutch stones, urns, animal bones, steel and others.

Pulau Aur

The island off Mersing, along with Pulau Dayang, Pulau Lang and Pulau Pinang, are rated among the best diving destinations within the Johor Marine Park Area. The deeper waters around the area ensure good visibility and a large variety of marine life. The island is especially popular among weekend divers.

The rich pelagic action also attracts numerous sport fishermen, hoping to try their luck with the marlins or sailfish outside the marine park island. Many private yachts anchor in the calm waters between Pulau Aur and Pulau Dayang.

The main reef is located towards the southern end of Pulau Aur and Pulau Pinang. The top of the reef begins at about 12m and slopes in excess of 25m, making it ideal for diving.

Zoo Johor

Established in 1928 by the late Johor King, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar, Zoo Johor is one of the oldest zoos in the country and also in Asia.

Originally called an “animal garden”, the medium-sized zoo was handed over to the state government to manage in the 1960s.

Catch a glimpse of mighty lions, or play with the friendly elephants. Observe the huge, silent crocodiles from a safe distance, or stroll around the lake while admiring the aquatic birds.

Take time to unwind at this unique zoo, and come back with wonderful memories and a day well spent!

Zoo Johor is open daily from 8am to 6pm. It gets packed during public holidays and school holidays, so avoid those periods if you don’t like crowds. The entrance fee is MYR 2 for adults and MYR 1 for children (prices subject to change).

Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm

At the Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm, Mr Ng, Malaysia's own Crocodile Hunter and a third- generation crocodile farmer, gamely brings visitors on a tour of these snapping reptiles.

There are more than 1,000 of them in this farm, including a toothless 130-year-old croc passed on from his grandfather. Past its prime, this geriatric prefers to spend its golden years sunbathing rather than scaring away the visitors.

The crocs here are of the saltwater crocodile species (Crocodylus Porosus). As you venture deeper into the farm, you may notice that the crocodiles keep getting bigger. Mr Ng may also oblige trigger-happy tourists by going right to the water’s edge to stir up some “excitement” for that perfect photo moment.

Leave the farm with interesting facts on crocodiles, and take home some souvenirs. The farm is open from 9am to 6pm. Entrance fees are MYR 8 for adults and MYR 4 for children (prices subject to change)

Sungai Lebam Wetlands

Watching fireflies, or lightning bugs, is one of the main attractions in the Sungai Lebam Wetland Preservation area. Catching sight of the synchronised blinking lights for the first time is a magical experience.

Fireflies emit light at their lower abdomen to attract mates and also scare away predators. They are harmless, but visitors should refrain from catching any as this would pose a threat to its fragile population.

Fireflies often congregate at a vast mangrove swamp, especially at the Berembang trees. One should keep silent and avoid flash photography so as not to scare them away.

There are fewer fireflies around on rainy nights and when the moon is full. The best time to watch fireflies is one to four hours after sunset. To get the most out of your trip, do plan your journey in advance.

Tanjung Piai National Park

If you've ever dreamed of falling asleep to the lilting sounds of the ocean, or waking up to the splendour of the universe, Tanjong Piai presents itself as a natural wonderland at the southernmost tip of Asia.

Located 90km south of Johor Bahru's city centre, Tanjung Piai's natural wonders have been gazetted into a National Park. Its beautiful mangroves, important for their resilience, are one of the mainstays to sustainable growth of the various mangrove wildlife. They also serve to protect the land from the fierce onslaught of the wild sea.

Royal Abu Bakar Museum

This architectural wonder was completed in 1866. It was commissioned by the late Sultan Abu Bakar and is also known as the Grand Palace (Istana Besar Johor).

Following a Renaissance style, the building was constructed by local artisans under the supervision of an European architect. The original furniture of the palace was made in England and ordered by the late Sultan Abu Bakar in 1866.

The palace was renovated to become a museum in 1982 and was officially opened in 1990.

Catch a glimpse of the grand lifestyle of the royal family through the silverware, ornaments as well as souvenirs by dignitaries that are on display at the museum. There are also pictures of the royal family from the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar.

Visit the museum today for an interesting historical journey of Johor's famous royal family. Opening hours are Saturday through Thurday, 9am– 5pm.

Gunung Ledang/Mount Ophir

Endau Rompin National Park

Endau Rompin, straddling the Johor/Pahang border, is the second National Park after Taman Negara. It covers an area of approximately 80,000 hectares of rich and exotic flora and fauna, encompassing the watershed of the rivers Endau and Rompin, from which it derives its name. In other words, this place is huge.

Legoland Malaysia theme park, the first in Asia, is situated in Nusajaya, Johor. Situated on 76 acres of land, the park is the sixth such park to open in the world.

Previous parks are located in Billund, Denmark (1968), Windsor, England (1996), California, USA (1999), Germany (2002), Florida, USA (2005).

Legoland is built with over 40 interactive rides, shows and attractions. One of the main attractions here is the Miniland. More than 30 million lego bricks are used in the building of these monuments including the Petronas Twin Towers, The Merlion Statue, Taj Mahal and others.

Taman Negara Pahang

Taman Negara (National Park) is the first and the oldest official Protected Area in the country, originally named King George V National Park. Declared in 1938 by the Sultans of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu (during King George's Silver Jubilee), it was gazetted to preserve the land's indigenous nature in perpetuity. The park was renamed Taman Negara after the nation gained independence in 1957.

There are many things to see and do in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia's largest highland resort. Sitting pretty amidst the Pahang rainforest is the little hamlet of Fraser's Hill. At 1,524 metres above sea level, this highlands resort is a naturalist's paradise that boasts innumerable plant, bird and animal species.

Kenong Rimba Park

Covering an area of 121 sq kilometres in the Kenong Valley, Kenong Rimba Park lies in the south-west of Taman Negara. Within the park are some magnificent limestone caves. The sense of tranquility and quiet solitude are broken only by the chirping of birds and the cascading waterfalls.

Each limestone cave is situated about half an hour's trek from each other. The most striking is the Gua Batu Tinggi, which resembles a dug-out boat. The Sungai Kenong River passes though this cave. Local folklore has it that the cave was formed when a boat carrying the Kings messenger from Pekan was turned into stone. This cave is approximately 122 to 152 metres above sea level. Here you can find a variety of plant life that includes orchids, fig trees and epiphytes.

Terengganu State Museum

Acclaimed as the largest museum in South East Asia, the Terengganu State Museum Complex houses century old artefacts and artworks of rich and colourful heritage.
